Wrestlers from 16 schools took the mats for perhaps the final time in the regular season Saturday at the Decorah winter tournament. Among them were the hosts Lady Vikes who finished second with 236 points, five points behind Waverly-Shell Rock who tallied 241. The South Winn girls’ wrestling team also took part in the tournament and finished with 84 points in seventh place.

Vikes have four finalists
Decorah had four reach Saturday’s finals and crowned to champions at its home tournament. Sisters Ana Simon and Naomi Simon each won their respective divisions, while Ashley Bjork and Mairi Sessions took second.
At 135 pounds, A. Simon, the younger sibling received a first-round bye to advance to the quarterfinal versus Alexis Oakland of North Fayette Valley. The freshman grappler needed 1:26 to throw the TigerHawk and move on. In the semifinal match, A. Simon threw Ella Schares of Sumner-Fredericksburg in 3:25. Squaring off with Mackenzie Bachman of MFL MarMac, A. Simon endured all three periods to win the 6-4 decision.
Taking the mat at 170 pounds, junior N. Simon moved directly into the quarterfinals with a first-round bye. In her first competition of the day, N. Simon pinned Briana Burke of Crestwood in 1:09, her longest match of the day. In the semifinal, the junior threw Aleah Eichenberger of NH/TV in 57 seconds to advance. Simon kept her perfect season intact with a fall in 44 seconds over Waukon’s Kloe Hemmesbach in the final.
Two champs for SW
A pair of seniors — Josie Hageman and Izzy Kipp — paved the way for the Warriors with titles Saturday.
Competing in a round-robin 110-pound bracket, Hageman went 4-0 for the day with a pair of decisions and a pair of falls. She opened her day with a 9-2 decision over Emma Hall of the North Central Trailblazers in round one. Round two pitted Hageman against Crestwood’s Addalyn Isaacson where the Warrior earned an 8-0 major decision win. It took Hageman 38 seconds to throw Madison Fury of Mason City in round four and pinned Ryley Hartman of Oelwein in the fifth round in 4:42.
On the other end of the weight classes, Kipp competed at 190 pounds and pinned her way to the top of the podium. The senior moved directly to the quarterfinals with a first-round bye. In Kipp’s first match, she pinned Kierra Alexander of North Fayette Valley in 24 seconds. The senior the threw Decorah’s Skyla Jevne in 3:52 to advance to the final against Kylie Willems of AGWSR. In the final, Kipp turned Willems for the fall in 1:49.
“I was very happy with how we competed as a whole today. There were a couple brackets where I wish we had fallen into a better spot but that’s the nature of the sport,” said SW Coach Ethan Adams. “This was our last regular season competition and we’re excited to gear up for regionals. This has already been a great year, and I have been extremely fortunate to coach these young women. They’ve worked hard and we’re very proud of the great teammates they’ve been and how they’ve carried themselves in practices and competitions. This is a great group of young women.”
