Viking grapplers take fifth at Flanagan Invite; Stille takes title

The Decorah wrestling team took to the mats at the Chris Flanagan Invite Saturday at Crestwood. Creston won the team title with 214 points. Decorah earned fifth with 91.5 points.

The Decorah wrestling team took to the mats at the Chris Flanagan Invite Saturday at Crestwood. Creston won the team title with 214 points. Decorah earned fifth with 91.5 points.
The Vikings crowned just one champion. At 145 pounds, Brady Stille utilized an 18-3 tech fall in 4:48 to defeat Lukas Carrier of Chatfield in the quarterfinals. It was another decision, this time 10-3 for Stille in the semifinal as he bested Caledonia-Houston’s Tucker Ginther. In the final, the Viking earned a 13-2 major decision over Triston Barncastle of Creston.
Decorah also had Austin Wilkins in the finals, who ended his day as the runner-up at 160 pounds. Wilkins first won a 5-1 decision over William Bolinger of Creston, then defeated Trent Pisney of Crestwood 5-0 in the semifinal. Facing another Creston grappler in the finals, Brennan Hayes, the Viking was rolled to his back in 1:18 to finish his day.

Thursday’s dual
Earlier in the week, Decorah hosted Class 3A No. 2 Waverly-Shell Rock in a conference dual, getting shut out by the Go-Hawks, 76-0.
In girls’ action on the mats, the Decorah earned the win, 30-21, with five Vikes winning matches. At 106 pounds, Chloe Sheffield pinned Amber Hoth in 1:20. Amelia Wadsworth threw Alli Seegers in 2:54 for the win at 138 pounds. Facing Gayle Robinson at 152 pounds, Mairi Sessions was the victor with a pin in 3:01. Naomi Simon needed little time to put Mary Carolus on her back, winning in 23 seconds at 170 pounds. At 220 pounds, Maia Foster threw Madison Hinrichs in 3:53.
