Viking harriers race to silver in windy conditions at NEIC meet

Decorah cross country runners did their best under windy conditions Tuesday night at the Northeast Iowa Conference meet, held at the Plum Creek Golf Course in Fredericksburg. The Vikings posted another solid effort at the NEIC meet.
The varsity girls narrowly missed the top spot earning 67 points to finish one point behind Class 2A No. 17 New Hampton.
The boys also took the runner-up spot by scoring 55 points. Waukon, ranked No. 2 in Class 2A, took the title with 32 points.
Yet again, the JV girls and boys took the top honors in their respective races.

Oh, so close
   Three of the seven varsity runners earned all-NEIC honors in the girls’ race by finishing in the top 15.
   New Hampton’s Cambelle Kolbet, ranked No. 2 in Class 2A,  broke the tape in 19:39.79. 
   Freshman Ana Simon roamed the course in 21:00.88 to be the first Viking to cross the finish line, claiming seventh place and her first all-conference honor. 
Finishing back-to-back in the 13th and 14th were Annalise Skrade and Danielle Losen. Skrade posted a time of 21:17.85, while Losen stopped the clock at 21:29.07. It was the second time for both earning all-NEIC honors. Losen was seventh a year ago, while Skrade was 11th.
   Just missing all-conference honors in 21:38.72 was Lily Sandhorst who finished 16th. Completing the team score with a time of 21:49.06 was Brynn Storhoff, good for 17th. Also racing on the varsity squad were Natalie Stevens (18th, 21:55.68) and Elsa Johnson (29th, 22:50.24).

Rolling on
   The varsity boys placed four of their seven runners in the top 15.
   “This was absolutely a great effort both mentally and physically for our team,” said Coach Brad Johansen.
   At the top of the field for gold was Caleb Hoins of Waverly-Shell Rock. The senior broke the tape in 16:58.63.
   Leading the Vikes to the finish line in 17:17.13 was senior Cade Olson for his second all-NEIC honor as he finished fifth. Olson was 15th a year ago. Davis Coppola wasn’t too far behind Olson, placing eighth and earning all-NEIC honors with a time of 17:22.65. Touring the course in 17:28.58, Henry Weis finished 12th to earn all-conference honors for the first time. Weis finished 29th last season at the NEIC meet. Also finishing in the top 15 was Grant Zilka who had a time of 17:30.31, good for 14th and all-NEIC honors. Just missing the all-conference nod in 16th place was Jake Magner in 17:50.46.
   Garrett See and Landyn Hook were also on the course in the varsity race, finished 18th and 28th respectively. See posted a time of 18:07.32, while Hook had a time of 18:48.72.

Golden JV harriers
   The JV girls’ and boys’ team both won the NEIC crowns. The girls put up a perfect score of 15. They had nine of the top-10 positions. 
   Leading the charge was senior Rebecca Anderson. She was the gold medalist in 22:12.37. Completing the team score were Kamryn Steines (2nd, 22:35.39), Grace Blikre (3rd, 22:36.13), Grace Brynsaas (4th, 22:51.45) and Deborah Hougen (5th, 22:55.07).
   The JV boys finished with 22 points and claimed eight of the top-10 spots.
D’Mitry Lesser led the way for the junior varsity squad with a second-place finish in 18:27.21. Freshmen Reid Berns and Riley Berns raced each other to the line for third and fourth finishing in 18:33.01 and 18:33.58, respectively. Others scoring for Decorah were Benson Newhouse (6th, 18:45.28) and Mitchell Stemper (7th, 18:45.89).

The big one
   The next one counts as the Vikings will take the course at the state qualifying meet Wednesday, Oct. 19, at West Delaware. The varsity girls start at 4 p.m., while the boys are at 4:30 p.m. The top three teams and top 15 individuals in each race advance to state.
