Over the weekend, the Decorah boys’ wrestling team found success, with a NEIC dual win Thursday and a tournament Saturday.

NEIC dual win
Thursday night, the Vikes earned a win in the league over Waukon, 42-24. In a dual with both squads fielding full line-ups, Decorah came away with nine victories on the mats.
Pinning their way to a win were Gavin Knutson (106) over Garner Lange in 31 seconds; Will Larson (138) over Cayden Kruger in 2:46; and William Fullhart (144) over Garrison Byrnes in 3:20. In 52 seconds, Tommy Sexton pinned Owen Grimstad at 190 pounds. D’mitry Lesser (120), Michael Clement (126) and Brody Hanson (165) all had major decision wins. Lesser won 10-2 over Jaxon Regan, while Clement was victorious 10-0 over Lucas Byrnes, and Hanson secured a 12-0 win over Jared Snitker. Also picking up decision wins were Mason Avila (132) over Justin Murphy, 11-4, and Kollin Henry (150) over Bralin Regan, 9-2.

Don Miller Invite
Saturday, the Vikes traveled to Fort Dodge to compete in the Don Miller Invite. Decorah had a successful day, finishing fourth with 159.5 points. Fort Dodge was the champion team with 243.5 points, followed by Ankeny Centennial with 230.5 and Algona with 164.
While Decorah didn’t crown any champs or have matmen in the finals, the Vikes had five wrestlers earn bronze.
At 106 pounds, a quarterfinal loss set up a long road for Viking Gavin Knutson to take the podium. The freshman lost his first match by a 9-5 decision to Bryce Oostenink of Sioux Center, but battled through the backside of the bracket with a tech fall and two pins, to face Oostenink in the match for third. This time it was Knutson coming out on top 2-0.
After losing a close 5-4 quarterfinal match to Class 3A No. 11 Kane Butrick of Fort Dodge, Mason Avila rebounded with a tech fall, a pin and a 5-1 decision to reach the bronze match against Andrew Roland of Ankeny Centennial. There, the Class 2A No. 7 Avila picked up the win at 132 pounds by a 9-3 decision.
Kollin Henry (150) won his quarterfinal by fall in 58 seconds over Fort Dodge’s Hunter Richardson but couldn’t overcome Ashton Moreno of Algona in the semifinal, falling by a 6-1 decision. The Decorah senior battled to pin Alfonso Villarreal of Mason City in 44 seconds and Jackson Anonson of Ankeny Centennial in the third-place match in 36 seconds to take third.
Winning his 165-pound quarterfinal by fall, Brody Hanson was thrown in the semifinal as the first period ended. In a battle to climb the podium, the senior defeated Algona’s Colby Jennings by a 7-2 decision, advancing to face Ian Fehr of Algona in the third place match. It was there that Hanson secured the bronze by an 11-3 major decision.
It took six matches for Class 2A No. 12 Tommy Sexton to earn third at 190 pounds, which included a tech fall, two pins, and a major decision. He opened the day with a tech fall over Bishop Heelan’s James Cleary before getting edged by a 3-2 decision in the quarterfinal by Class 2A No. 3 Gaige Allen of Humboldt. The sophomore battled back to pin Brock Good of Forest City and Brody Shipler of Algona before a major decision over Brendan Lamfers of Sioux Center in the consolation semifinals. He finished the day third with a 10-3 decision over Jack Cahill of Ankeny Centennial.
