After a long week of rainouts and short practices, the Decorah boys’ tennis team headed off to play Winona Cotter on their indoor courts Friday, ultimately prevailing 5-2 as a team.
“Playing indoors is always an adjustment to lighting, sounds of the game and fans cheering, but also a fun opportunity. Again, playing under Minnesota rules where you only play singles or doubles, we were able to expand their lineup and tinker with different combinations on the court,” said Coach Matt Anderson.
In No. 1 and No. 2 singles, Caden Branum (6-0, 6-1) and Daniel Skrade (6-2, 6-0), quickly overcame some nerves as their experience showed in coming up with big wins against quality opponents to set the tone for the team. At No. 3 and No. 4 singles, Aidan Nalean-Carlson (2-6, 5-7) and Grady Brauer (6-4. 4-6, 7-10).
“Quite often a tennis match comes down to a few points at key moments that cause momentum swings, and that is what happened at No. 3 and No. 4 singles,” noted Coach Anderson. “Aidan and Grady fought their emotions in those tough moments and I’m confident this experience will become a positive one as we move through the season for both players.”
In doubles play, Decorah secured all three matches with relative ease as Cotter has a very young team, many new to tennis. Landon Baker and Brendan Hunter teamed up for a pair of 6-1 set wins, while Michael Njus and Liam Chamberlain also won in two 6-1 sets.
Decorah has a busy week ahead with three matches, at Independence Monday, at home Tuesday (April 12) with Waverly Shell-Rock and traveling to Clear Lake on Thursday, April 14.
