Viking netters handed first loss

By Becky Walz,

Facing Class 4A No. 8 Waverly-Shell Rock (14-4, 2-0 NEIC) at home Tuesday night, the Decorah volleyball team (7-1, 1-1 NEIC) faltered in three sets, 11-25, 19-25 and 16-25.
“For whatever reason we were not ready when the match started and our play in set one demonstrated that. Once we settled down a little we were able to compete with Waverly-Shell Rock,” said Coach Gina Holthaus. “We passed fairly well but just couldn’t find the floor at times with our swings. As we’ve been saying all year, we know there are things that we need to continue to work on and a good team like Waverly-Shell Rock is going to identify those very quickly and capitalize on them. As we stated last night after the match, if we learn from the experience we will continue to grow and get better as a team. Independence on Thursday is going to be another tough match for us, and we need to be able to bounce back and be ready.”
Amelia Dugger was swinging well and led the Vikes with eight kills and had a solo block to go with a 6-for-6 serving mark. With seven kills apiece were Chloe Reiser and Haley Gossman. Reiser also had eight digs. Senior Mara Holland dished out 22 assists, had nine digs and was 9-for-9 in serving. At the net it was Annika Franzen coming away with three solo blocks as she served 8-for-8.
Decorah looks to get back in the win column Thursday, Sept. 16, at Class 3A No. 10 Independence. The non-conference match is set to begin at 7:15 p.m. Saturday, the Vikings are competing in the Waukon tournament at 9 a.m.
