Viking netters remain undefeated in first week

   It was a total of seven matches and seven wins for the Decorah volleyball team (7-0) in the opening week of contests last week. After defeating Prairie du Chien Tuesday, the Vikes easily handled North Fayette Valley Thursday and reigned over the Charles City tournament Saturday.

At home
   It was another exceptional performance on the court Thursday for the Vikings as they took care of North Fayette Valley (0-1) at home, 3-0. Set scores were 25-12, 25-8 and 25-9.
   “We did some things better in this match, our passing was good which allowed our setters to move the ball around to our hitters. We are getting a little more settled with each other and positions. Saturday will be a good day for us with some good competition to see where we are really at,” said Coach Gina Holthaus.
   Senior Haley Gossman had 12 kills on 21 attempts and came away with six digs, one solo block and three aces. Fellow middle hitter Amelia Dugger slammed down 10 kills and went 17-for-17 at the serving line with a trio of ace serves. Providing eight kills and 14 assists was Chloe Reiser, who was 10-for-11 in serving with three aces. Dahlyn Headington was there for a team-high nine digs and was 12-for-13 in serving with another three aces.

Tourney time
   Back at work Saturday, Decorah traveled to Charles City to compete in a tournament, going 5-0 for the day.
   The Vikings defeated Iowa Falls-Alden (0-3) in two sets, 21-16 and 23-21. Up next was Riceville (1-3), where Decorah took care of business, 21-11 and 21-13. Facing Mason City, the Red and Blue hammered out a two-set victory, 21-9 and 21-11. It was a closer match with the host team, however Decorah managed to defeat the Comets (8-2), 21-17 and 21-19. In final match of the day, the Vikings defeated Hampton-Dumont-CAL (0-6) by sets of 21-8 and 21-10.
   Individual stats from Saturday’s tournament were unavailable at press time.
