Viking softball on five-game win streak

With three games played to conclude the week, the Decorah softball team (13-5, 8-3 NEIC) ended strong with a trio of wins. Their own tournament was cancelled due to rainy conditions Saturday.

Visiting the Go-Hawks
Thursday night, the Vikings traveled to Waverly-Shell Rock (5-13, 3-8 NEIC), sweeping the Go-Hawks.
In the first contest, the Vikes won, 4-1, scoring once in the fourth and fifth and two in the seventh.
Decorah’s offense managed just two hits, including a home run by Bryar Duwe and single by Paige Werner. Clara Hjelle threw all seven frames giving up one run on four hits and struck out six batters.
Both teams pounded the ball better in the second game, with the Vikes coming out with a 7-6 win. Aided by a five-run third inning, Decorah added to its lead with a run in the fifth and seventh. The Go-Hawks fought back in the bottom of the seventh, managing to scratch to runs across the plate before Decorah recorded the final out.
Hjelle and Sydney Kipp stood in the circle with Hjelle collecting the win.
The Vikings had eight hits with Duwe and Autumn Schaller connecting for triples. Schaller also had a single and drove in two runs. Lani Hubka had three hits, one RBI and two stolen bases.

Stepping out of NEIC
Traveling again Friday night, Decorah bested North Fayette Valley (9-14, 9-3 UIC) in five innings, 15-2.
The Vikes broke out the hits early and put up runs in each of the frames, scoring three in the first and second, one in the third. They capped off the game with a five-run fourth and another three runs in the fifth.
Hjelle got the win, giving up three hits and striking out four.
Decorah pounded 10 hits. Ellie Luzum was 2-for-4 with a double with a run scored and an RBI. Schaller was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two stolen bases.

This week
A varsity doubleheader is on tap for Decorah tonight (Tuesday, June 28) versus Crestwood at home at 5:30 p.m. The Vikes will host Dike-New Hartford Wednesday, June 29, at 7 p.m., and will finish the week versus Hampton-Dumont Friday, July 1, at 7 p.m.
