After a disappointing back-to-back losses during the week, the Decorah volleyball team (12-2) rebounded to win the title at the Waukon tournament Saturday.
Tough loss
The Vikings fell to Class 3A No. 13 Independence (6-5) Thursday, Sept. 16, on the road 3-0. Set scores were 19-25, 16-25 and 21-25.
“We did not play well tonight, but yet we’re still in every set. We still have some things we need to work out, but it is still early in the season and we will get better,” said Coach Gina Holthaus.
Mara Holland had 17 assist, 10 digs and a 15-for-15 serving mark on the day. Amelia Dugger had 10 kills, a block and served 10-for-11, while Chloe Reiser had three kills and 12 digs. Ashley Schneberger provided three kills and two digs. In for six digs, two kills and two solo blocks was Haley Gossman.

Dominating the tourney
Decorah dictated play Saturday at Waukon, going 5-0 to win the tourney championship. On their way to the title, the Vikings defeated MFL MarMac (2-4) by sets of 21-13 and 21-10; Riceville (2-9) by sets of 21-7 and 21-16; and Dunkerton (12-3) by sets of 15-21, 21-15 and 15-7 in pool play. Decorah faced off with Dunkerton a second time in the semifinal, winning by two identical 21-12 sets. In the championship match it was the a NEIC matchup between the Vikings and host Waukon Indians (11-8) with Decorah coming out on top 21-13 and 21-12.
“It was a great day for us. We were able to work out a few things that didn’t go well last week and get a little positive momentum going into the NH match on Tuesday,” said Coach Holthaus. “We played very well together especially with a couple line-up changes.”
Leading Decorah at the net for the day with 41 kills was Amelia Dugger. The junior also went 52-for-52 at the service line with nine aces, had 20 digs and five solo blocks. Annika Franzen pounded out 16 kills and was 25-for-25 in serving with three aces. At the end of the day senior Mara Holland dished out 85 assists, had 33 digs and served 39-for-43 with six ace serves.
