By Becky Walz,
Closing out the week with a NEIC sweep over Waukon, the Decorah baseball team (9-3, 6-0 NEIC) remains on top of the league. Thursday, the Vikes stepped out of the conference to play Mason City, giving up runs late in the loss.
So close
The Vikes were unable to hold on to their 6-4 advantage after five innings Thursday as they played Mason City (9-5) on the road, giving up the go-ahead run on a wild pitch, eventually succumbing to the Mohawks, 8-6.
“Each night out we are getting closer to playing really good team baseball, however we need more consistency from the pitcher position for seven innings to give us the opportunity to win baseball games and play efficiently,” said Coach Adam Riley.
Drew Snyder and Noah Storts combined for the seven innings, each striking out for opposing batters. Decorah knocked out eight hits including a triple by Kyle Renken and double by Keenan Tyler.

NEIC action
After a long night and disappointing loss at Mason City the previous night, the Vikings were focused and connected for hit-after-hit, sweeping Waukon, 20-0 and 16-5.
“Coach Hogan and myself could not have been happier with the excellent effort and focus in these games. Cai Brevig really set the tone with an outstanding pitching performance on the mound and as a team we continue to have great situational team at bats offensively. In game two, Briggs Duwe was extremely effective on the mound by giving us a chance to play team defense,” said Coach Riley.
Decorah combined for 33 hits in the NEIC doubleheader, including five homers by Cael Luzum, Tyler Thompson Noah Storts, Kyle Renken and Kody Bodensteiner.
