Vikings begin to eye postseason with one game left

By Becky Walz,

Four games down, one to go in district action and the Decorah football team (6-2, 4-0) is eyeing the district title once again after blanking Waterloo East (1-7, 0-4) at home Friday night, 37-0.
“Our team played a solid game. Waterloo East was very aggressive with their blitzes and we were able to pick up many of them. We would have liked to rush the ball more, but we were able to pass it with effectiveness and our special teams and defense were excellent. Any time you can shut a team out, you must have had a good night defensively and on special teams,” said Coach Pat Trewin.

Lots of points
Where there was a will, there was a way for the Vikings to score, turning the ball over on downs once and punting once during their possessions. The other five possessions by Decorah ended with the ball in the end zone.
Jaden Baker kickstarted the offense with a pick six in the first quarter for the Vikes, before Keenan Tyler capped off a six-play touchdown drive in the end zone. Brody Young was the man of the second quarter with a touchdown run and a 19-yard field goal to give Decorah a 23-0 halftime lead.
Young scored twice more in the third quarter, once on a 25-yard pass from Tyler and the other on a 25-yard dash to the goal line.

The highlights
The Decorah offense was in sync with 293 yards of offense, as was the Viking defense by holding Waterloo East to 92 yards of total offense.
“Brody Young, Jaden Baker and Joe Hjelle had particularly good nights,” praised Coach Trewin. “Brody scored on touchdown runs, a reception, PATs and a field goal. In addition, he was very busy on kickoffs. Jaden Baker had two interceptions — returning one for a touchdown, five tackles and some very nice rushes. Joe Hjelle blocked well and disrupted Waterloo’s offense and got two sacks.”
Keenan Tyler fired off 16-for-23 passes for 181 yards, gathering another 13 yards on the ground. Brody Young carried the pigskin seven times for 45 yards and scored twice, while Dane Frieden added 36 yards in nine carries. Joseph Bockman was Tyler’s primary passing target with 75 yards of receiving in six catches. Jacob Pipho had another 35 yards receiving, while Zach Jermier had 30.
Bradyn Reiser, Baker and J. Hjelle each had five total tackles with Baker having four solo stops and J. Hjelle had three solo tackles.

One last tune-up
“We are happy to get the win and know we have qualified for the playoffs. Now we will focus on winning a district title by beating Waverly-Shell Rock. They are a very strong and talented team. It will take a great effort all week to prepare and an outstanding effort to win.
The Vikes have one final district contest Friday, Oct. 23, at Waverly-Shell Rock at 7:30 p.m., before looking to the postseason.
