Extra inning
It took eight innings for the Vikings to best Ottumwa in the opener Saturday, defeating the Bulldogs, 14-13, on a solo homer by Kaden Alstad.
“Our kids really competed in their at-bats throughout this game giving kids like Keenan Tyler an opportunity to come up with multiple big two out hits to give us a chance to win this ball game. Dane Frieden was outstanding in relief,” said Coach Adam Riley.
Decorah had 14 hits in the game including Alstad’s home run. Tyler went 5-for-5 at the plate with two doubles and drove in seven runs. Other extra-base hits were collected by Noah Storts, Sam Kleiner and Ethan Holthaus.

Besting the Warriors
It was a tough day for the Warriors defensively and allowing some big innings early in both games put them in a deficit they couldn’t overcome as Decorah defeated SW, 7-2, to end the day.
“When we are playing at a high level, we pitch and defend to keep us in games and try to manufacture runs on offense. Our guys did a good job of competing all day long regardless of the score and I was encouraged by our offense getting double digit hits in the second game which hopefully leads to a sign of good things to come with another big week of games coming up,” said SW coach Alex Smith.
