Vikings bow out of postseason

By Becky Walz,

The Decorah girls’ soccer team squared off with a talented Waverly-Shell Rock squad in the Class 2A Region 6 semifinal Wednesday, ending the season 9-0.
It was again tough sledding for the Vikings, falling behind by a goal after only a few minutes. Decorah then gave them the gift of another goal shortly after that by misplaying a simple ball on the ground.
“When that happened, the air seemed to go out of the girls and they started to panic when we had the ball, kicking aimlessly instead of passing out of danger. W-SR kept pressing us all over the field, stealing the ball from us almost at will,” said Coach Loren Hendrickson.
By the end of the first half, the Go-Hawks led 6-0. After the coaches told the girls to compete with all they had for the rest of the game, the Vikings came out a little better and held W-SR to three goals in the second half, which was an improvement over the previous two meetings where the games were ended early by the 10-goal walkover rule.
“All in all, it was a very good season for us. Take away the three losses to possible state champion Waverly-Shell Rock, and we’re 9-3. Not bad,” said Coach Hendrickson. “Our senior class this year was the best I’ve had since I’ve been here. Besides being coachable, they’re good, smart (six academic all-state), fun girls to be around. We had a good time practicing and playing together. They will be greatly missed.”
