Vikings drop non-conference contest to Denver

By Becky Walz,

Despite a furious fourth-quarter rally, the Decorah girls’ basketball team (8-4, 5-2 NEIC) couldn’t come back Tuesday night at Denver (9-4), falling 59-51.

After the first quarter, the Vikes were dead even with the Cyclones at eight points apiece. Things continued to click in the second period for the Red and Blue as they went to the locker room, down by two, 25-23. Decorah went cold for four minutes in the third quarter, allowing Denver to pull ahead 42-29. Outscoring the Cyclones 22-17 in the final frame wasn’t enough for the Vikings to come back for the win.

“This was another good test for us to see what areas we have improved upon and what things need improvement. We continue to work on getting better with each night we compete,” said Coach Shannon Quandahl.

Bryar Duwe had 19 points for Decorah, while Emma Nierengarten was also in double digits with 13. Annika Franzen added six to the mix as Haley Gossman provided five.

Decorah pays New Hampton a visit Friday, Jan. 22, for a tip-off set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, the Lady Vikes host Beckman at 5:30 p.m., to finish off the week and prepare for Charles City to come to town Tuesday, Jan. 26.
