The Decorah baseball team (16-7, 12-3 NEIC) was looking to keep its win streak going as it hosted Waverly-Shell Rock (17-6, 12-3 NEIC) Tuesday night. While both games were close, it was not meant to be as the Go-Hawks defeated the Vikings 2-0 and 10-8.
Game one began with the Go-Hawks loading the bases and scoring once. A Viking error in the fourth gave W-SR the opportunity to score again and that was all the Go-Hawks needed to collect the league win.
Keenan Tyler climbed the hill for five innings and struck out five with Dane Frieden throwing two frames in relief.
With five hits in the game, Decorah was led by Tyler and Brody Young who had two singles apiece. Also putting the bat on the ball were Sam Kleiner and Jacob Pipho.
“Our pitching and defensive effort gave us a chance to be in this game in spite of a number of non-competitive at bats against a very quality effort from the Waverly-Shell Rock pitcher,” said Coach Adam Riley.
The Viking offense came alive in game two, scoring eight runs but it wasn’t enough to score the victory. Highlighting the contest was a three-run bomb over the centerfield fence by Kleiner in the sixth frame.
The loss went to Kaden Alstad with Landon Kuennen, Brady Bohner and Ethan Holthaus all throwing in relief.
Decorah tallied six hits in the contest. Kleiner had two of them with the home run and a single. Ben Wymer also connected twice including a double and an RBI.
