By Becky Walz,
Make that five.
The Decorah baseball team (24-5, 17-1 NEIC) now has a five-game win streak going, having swept Crestwood (7-18, 4-14 NEIC) in a double header Tuesday night.
In the first contest, the Vikings won 13-0 in four innings. Decorah posted six runs in the first on two outs. A double by Noah Storts in the second inning drove in Keenan Tyler who had reached base on an error initially. The Viking offense remained hot in the third and fourth, scoring three runs in each frame.
Decorah utilized its 15 hits. Storts was 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI, while Tyler Thompson and Tyler went 2-for-3. Thompson drove in three runs.
Cael Luzum pitched a nearly perfect game. He didn’t give up a hit until the fourth inning, striking out six and walking none, throwing only 57 pitches in the five frames.
The second game was a slugfest, with Decorah winning 11-1 in five innings.
The Vikings scored in all five frames; however, it was the first and fifth where they did the most damage. The opening inning began with Luzum receiving a walk and stealing second. Decorah managed to score its first two runs on back-to-back singles by Briggs Duwe and Tyler. Storts kept his hitting streak alive with a double to score Tyler to put the Vikes ahead 3-0. Decorah pushed single runs across home plate in each the second, third and fourth frames before rattling off five in the fifth to close out the game.
Decorah had 11 hits, led by Storts who had three, including two doubles with four RBI. Tyler had a double and single and drove in three runs. Kody Bodensteiner also had two hits in the game.
Cai Brevig was efficient on the mound, going three and a third innings. He gave up three hits and struck out two.
“Any night in which you are able to have 26 hits to back solid pitching and defense is a great night for any team. Up and down the lineup we had great at bats,” said Coach Adam Riley. “Cael, Cai and Gunnar gave us a chance to play great defense throughout the evening. Throughout the conference season we had many guys contribute on any given night and do so very well. This a great night to finish the conference schedule of games as we look forward to getting ready for the postseason.”
