Vikings pick up road win

By Becky Walz,

It was a big night offensively for the Decorah boys’ basketball team (3-1, 1-0 NEIC) as the Vikings defeated Crestwood (2-3, 0-1 NEIC) on the road Tuesday, 74-59.
“We played well at times and did manage to earn a victory, but we still need to work if we want to get where we are capable of. We trust our guys will do that and make the necessary adjustments. It’s a marathon, not a sprint,” said Coach Jonathan Carlson.
The Vikings were on fire to start the game, putting up 16 points in the first quarter to lead 16-10. That firepower, combined with tough defense, led to a 38-21 lead at the half.
The halftime break did nothing to stop the offense, with the Vikes scoring 22 points in the third quarter. The defense did its thing, holding on to the 60-45 lead after three quarters.
Eight Vikes put points on the board, with four in double figures. Leading the way with 15 points was sophomore Trey McCain, while Joe Bockman poured in 14. With 12 apiece were Noah Storts and Ben Bockman. Ethan Holthaus chipped in nine.
Decorah is home Friday, Dec. 17, versus New Hampton before playing Rushford-Peterson Saturday, Dec. 18, at the Luther College gym at 4 p.m. Next week is equally busy with a pair of games before the break — at Waukon Tuesday, Dec. 21 and versus South Winn, Thursday, Dec. 23, at 6:30 p.m.

Decorah 16 22 22 14 74
