Vikings place in nine events

The Decorah girls’ and boys’ track team contingent was cheering loud and proud for the Vikings as the Red and Blue tracksters scored in a combined nine events at the state track meet held at Drake Stadium in Des Moines last weekend.
The Viking girls finished 13th in Class 3A in team standings, securing 19 points. Solon won the title with 84 points.

Reasons to celebrate
Thursday began with Julia Alberts garnering bronze in the discus, heaving the weight 134 feet 11 inches. Lani Hubka grabbed the eighth and final qualifying spot in the 200-meter dash prelims, crossing the finish line in 26.54 seconds. For the boys it was Joseph Hjelle picking up points in the discus. The senior finished fifth with a throw of 150 feet 11 inches.
The best finish Friday came in the boys’ shot put by Hjelle as he hoisted the weight 58 feet 8.25 inches. It was followed by a fifth-place finish for two-time state qualifier Chloe Reiser. The junior sent the shot put 41 feet 7.25 inches for her medal. 
In another field event it was Haywood Stowe earning points in the long jump with a leap of 21 feet 4.25 inches, good for sixth place.

On the track, the girls’ 4×200 quartet posted a fifth-place finish in 1:44.73. Members of the relay were Hubka, Brielle Buresh, Sami Mount and Brinley Krivachek. Later it was Krivachek, Hubka, Kailyn O’Gara and Buresh sprinting around the track in 49.24 seconds in the 4×100 prelims in fourth place to advance to the finals. 
In Saturday’s finals, the 4×100 girls’ quartet circle the Blue Oval in 49.85 seconds to place fourth. 
The sprint medley relay of Krivachek, Buresh, Mount and Hubka snagged eighth-place in 1:51.75. Hubka finished the 200-meter dash finals in eighth place in 26.17 seconds. 

Also on the track
Other girls getting to take on the state meet were: Buresh, 12th in the 100-meter dash in 13.19; Hayley Stowe, 21st in the 100-meter dash; shuttle hurdle relay (Kallie Mincks, Sydney Kipp, Autumn Schaller, Anya Lovstuen), 12th in 1:09.81; 4×400 relay (Mount, McKenzie Riley, Danielle Losen, Abby Halverson), 20th in 4:15.97; and 4×800 relay (Losen, Halverson, Lily Sandhorst, Madison Tollefson), 20th in 10:24.04.
Boys on the Blue Oval were Jacob Pipho, ninth in the 400-meter hurdles in 56.44 seconds; Hogan Smith, 10th in the 800-meter run in 1:59.66; Austin Wilkins, 11th in the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.46; Kaiden Quandahl, 18th in high jump; and the shuttle hurdle relay (Wilkins, Dakota Johnson, Gavin Groux, Pipho), 14th in 1:03.71.
