Finally getting the weather to cooperate, the Decorah boys’ tennis team ended the dual portion of the season on a positive note, winning 2-of-3 matches last week.

Oh, so close
Saturday, the Vikings squeezed in one final meet with a make-up contest at Onalaska. While Decorah played well, the Vikes came up short 4-3.
Coming away with wins in singles action were No. 1 Caden Branum and No. 2 Daniel Skrade. Branum defeated his opponent 6-0 and 6-1, while Skrade earned the win 7-6 (7-3) and 7-6 (7-5). The doubles team of Aidan Nalean-Carlson and Liam Chamberlain were also victorious in three sets (5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (12-10)).

Catching up
After their conference victory Monday, May 2, the Vikings went on to collect road wins at Clear Lake Tuesday, 9-0, and at Waterloo Catholic Thursday, 8-1. Both meets saw a few new faces and doubles lineups as the team has dealt with a few sicknesses, AP exams and working on district pairings.
Coach Matt Anderson commented, “This last week has been a grind as we make up matches from earlier postponements, but the team has come prepared each night and fought through sore and tired muscles.”

It all counts
Decorah started the postseason play with the Class 1A district meet Monday, May 9, as the Vikings hosted Aplington-Parkersburg, Clear Lake, Epworth, Hampton-Dumont-CAL, Independence, Oelwein and Waverly-Shell Rock for singles and doubles action. Individual qualifiers from these meets advance to the 2022 IHSSA state tournament in Waterloo May 24-25.
