Vikings scramble in loss to Denver

By Becky Walz,

In a game that had about as many hits as an NHL game, Decorah (3-3) came out on the short end versus Denver (3-1) on the road Monday night.
“Denver seemed more interested in knocking us over than actually playing the game,” said Coach Loren Hendrickson.
The Denver Cyclones scored the first goal on a corner kick for a header to the near post. Looking to respond, Decorah threatened almost immediately after that when Taryn Sanderman put the ball into space for Abby Milburn — almost the same play the Vikes scored on against Clear Lake. This time the goal wasn’t made, however. A little later, Decorah made another attack that left Clara Rooney alone against their goalkeeper. Rooney just couldn’t get enough foot around the ball to put it in.
Denver scored again in the first half on a play by one of their wingers, putting the ball just out of reach of Viking goalkeeper, Grace Bachelder. Decorah had another golden chance in the first half when Milburn crossed from the end line right in front of goal where Sanderman just missed the tap in by a hair.
The second half saw Decorah put the ball in dangerous places for scrambles in front of goal, but the Vikings couldn’t find the net. Denver scored on a breakaway and on a scramble in front of the Vikes net.
“Give them credit for putting their chances away while we didn’t,” said Coach Hendrickson.
The Vikings will get a rematch with the Cyclones in their next contest slated for Monday, May 3, at home beginning at 5:30 p.m.
