Vikings stand atop league

In lone possession of the top spot in the Northeast Iowa Conference, the Decorah baseball team (16-5, 12-2 NEIC) swept Crestwood (1-17, 1-13 NEIC) Friday at home, 3-1 and 13-2.
“I was really happy to come up with these two wins and our pitching and defense really did a great job,” said Coach Adam Riley.

Leaving numerous runners on base early on, Decorah had chances to put the game away early, but took until the fifth to plate its first two runs of the game. Issued a walk, Ben Wymer later scored on a double by Keenan Tyler who later scored on a Ben Stille single. In the sixth, Jacob Pipho scored the Vikings’ insurance run after being hit by a pitch and stealing second. 
On the mound it was Kaden Alstad earning the win with nine strikeouts, giving up one run on four hits and two walks.
Decorah had seven hits in the contest with Tyler coming up with two and driving in a run. Noah Storts had two singles, while Stille, Pipho and Wymer had the Vikes’ other hits.
It took five innings for Decorah to put the game to rest, scoring three runs in the second and five in each of third and fourth frames.
Throwing the five innings for the Vikes for the win was Brady Bohner with three Ks.
Of Decorah’s 11 hits, Pipho had two doubles to go with one RBI and two stolen bases. Storts, Ethan Holthaus and Wymer also had doubles in the contest.
Decorah hosts Waverly-Shell Rock Tuesday, June 21, at 5 p.m., for a NEIC doubleheader, then welcomes Independence Wednesday, June 22, for a JV/varsity twinbill at 5 p.m. The Vikes are at Clear Lake Thursday, June 23 and Waukon Friday, June 24.
