The Decorah football team (1-1) knew it faced a tough task Friday night, battling the returning Class 2A champion Waukon (1-1) at home.
The Vikings put up a fight but fell to the Indians 15-0 as Waukon held Decorah to 61 yards of offense while rattling off 312.
“We faced an excellent Waukon team who had come off a tough loss. We knew that they would play hard and with pride. Many of these players had started on their state championship team last year,” said Coach Patrick Trewin.
Breaking it down
Wet field conditions and the consistent drizzle foiled numerous plays by both squads.
Ryan Johanningmeier broke the Waukon offense first with an interception at midfield. On the move, Decorah returned the pigskin to the Indians on a fumble. On the Indians second drive it was Keenan Tyler who plucked a pass out of the air for another Viking interception. A fumble recovery by Johanningmeier gave the Vikes another short field, but once again was stopped in the red zone. A punt to the Waukon 32-yard line set the stage for the Indians to march down the field to score the first touchdown of the game and hold an 8-0 lead at halftime.
“We were not able to get moving offensively. We made some mistakes in our blocking and could not get a good push at the line of scrimmage,” said Coach Trewin.
After holding the Indians off the board in the third period, the turnovers continued to pile up for Waukon, but it didn’t faze the visitors as the Indians went on to score a late touchdown and claim the victory.
Highlights
“Our defense and special teams were really good, and our guys played hard, but we need to score to win, and we had a couple of chances, but could not produce,” said Coach Trewin. “We felt that we had a good week of practice, and we will need to keep putting together good practices to improve our game.”
Decorah had 48 yards of rushing, led by Tyler with 25, while Brody Young added another 20. Ben Wymer provided 15 yards in his four touches.
Defensively, Jacob Pipho and Tyler led the with total tackles with Pipho have four solo takedowns. Johanningmeier was there for seven tackles with five solo and a pair of interceptions. Zach Jermier, Noah Storts, Brayden Reiser and Joseph Hjelle all had six total tackles.
