Vikings suffer defeats at NEIC tourney

The Decorah volleyball team (18-12, 2-8 NEIC) will look to put the Northeast Iowa Conference tournament behind them as they open the postseason. The Vikes went 0-5 at the NEIC event and look to get back in the win column.
The Vikings host Mason City in the first round of Class 4A Region 4 action tonight (Tuesday, Oct. 18), at 7 p.m. A win puts Decorah up against NEIC foe Charles City on the Comets’ home court Thursday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m.

   The Vikings host Mason City in the first round of Class 4A Region 4 action tonight (Tuesday, Oct. 18), at 7 p.m. A win puts Decorah up against NEIC foe Charles City on the Comets’ home court Thursday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m.
   The first two games of the NEIC tournament for the Vikes were played Thursday in New Hampton with Decorah dropping matches to Charles City and the host Chickasaws, 2-0. 
   It was a close match versus the Comets (26-12, 5-2 NEIC) before Decorah ultimately fell 17-21 and 19-21. Highlighting the offensive with six kills was Sami Mount, while Maddy Fromm handed out five assists. Dahlyn Headington led the defensive with seven digs, with Fromm grabbing another five. At the service line, Amelia Dugger went 10-for-1 with one ace.
   The Vikings also put up a good fight against New Hampton (22-14, 7-0 NEIC) before dropping the sets by scores of 17-21 and 23-25. This time it was Dugger making some noise offensively with seven kills with Emma Wold dishing out eight assists. Autumn Schaller provided a team-high seven digs, while Headington was there for six. Wold also had a 9-for-9 service mark, while Dugger was 8-for-8 with two aces.
   Back on the courts in Waverly Saturday to wrap up the NEIC tournament, Decorah faced Waukon (16-18. 2-6 NEIC) first giving up the match 17-21 and 15-21. No stats from this match were available at press time.
   The Vikings then faced Waverly-Shell Rock (20-18, 7-1 NEIC) and lost by sets of 11-21 and 12-21. Decorah had just 10 kills on 46 attack attempts against the Go-Hawks with Dugger providing three. Leah Holland and Mount had two apiece. With 27 team digs, Fromm came away with eight to go with her five assists, while Wold had six digs and two assists. As a team, Decorah served 100 percent, going 24-for-24 with three aces from Fromm.
   The day ended for Decorah against Crestwood (14-23, 2-8 NEIC) with sets in the Cadets’ favor 21-23 and 10-21. Dugger delivered six kills to lead the Vikes while Fromm dished out six assists. Leading the Decorah defense with six digs was Lani Hubka with Dugger and Fromm each having one solo block.
