The Decorah boys’ soccer teams made the long drive down to Dubuque Thursday for their first regular season game against Dubuque Senior. The junior varsity (1-0) team took away a 3-0 victory, but the varsity (0-1) team walked away with a loss, 5-2 for the Rams.
The underclassmen came out to play during the JV game, with goals coming from sophomores Parker Heiselman and Jeremiah Rediske. Junior Ethan Bockman also put one up on the scoreboard, while sophomore Caleb Meyer shut out the Rams for the whole 70 minutes he spent in the goal.
The varsity game started out evenly matched, with Dubuque Senior scoring in the first half. Decorah responded in the second, with two goals in a row putting them in the lead. It didn’t hold, however, as Dubuque was able to put three more into the net to solidify the win for the Rams, 5-2. Coach Julie Simiele shared her thoughts on where Dubuque had the edge, and where she hopes to take the team going forward.
“Dubuque was absolutely lethal on corner kicks; very disciplined finishers,” said Coach Julie Simiele. “We are proud of how our team committed to the effort. We’re working within a new formation this year and the guys are adapting to it well, but we obviously have some kinks to work out. We’re all about overcoming adversity this year and this is just the first step.”
The Vikes will take to their home turf on Tuesday, playing against Postville at 7 p.m.
