Vikings take care of No. 6 Denver

The NEIC leading Vikings were undeterred by Class 2A No. 6 Denver as the Decorah boys’ basketball team (12-4, 8-2 NEIC) defeated the Cyclones (12-3) on the road Thursday night, 71-66.

Decorah fell behind in the first period, 17-14, before coming alive to take a 39-34 lead at the half. The Vikings extended their advantage to 57-46 with eight minutes to play and managed to hold off the Cyclones for the win.

Three Vikes were in double figures scoring. Joe Bockman did the most damage for Decorah, scoring 23 points and grabbing five rebounds. Charlie Robinson posted 17 points to go with four boards and five assists. Jacob Pipho provided 11 points, while Briggs Duwe just missed double digits with nine points with six rebounds, three assists and three steals. Under the basket it was Carson Wemark leading the way with seven rebounds.

Saturday’s non-conference game versus Beckman was postponed due to weather and has yet to be rescheduled on the calendar. Decorah will be back in NEIC action Friday, Feb. 5, at Waverly-Shell Rock at 7:30 p.m.
