By Becky Walz,

A big performance by junior Yazmeen Whitsitt propelled the Class 4A No. 6 Decorah girls’ basketball team (9-2, 5-0 NEIC) to a 66-37 victory over previously unbeaten Class 2A No. 6 Cascade (8-1) Tuesday at home.
The Vikings quickly doubled up on the Cougars with a 16-8 lead after the first eight minutes. Decorah continued to pound the ball and had a comfortable 27-17 lead at halftime. The Red and Blue kept the visitors at bay in the second half, outscoring the Cougars 39-20 for the win.
“We still have some work to do on the defensive side of the ball, but overall, this was solid win,” said Coach Shannon Quandahl.
Whitsitt scored 15 points in the first half and finished with 24 overall. Bryar Duwe was also in double figures with 15 points. Coming through with seven points apiece were Brooklyn Fromm, Kylie O’Hara and Haley Gossman.
Decorah is at Class 4A No. 11 Waverly-Shell Rock Friday, Jan. 6, at 6 p.m., and opens next week with a non-conference game in Monona against MFL MarMac Monday, Jan. 9, at 6:30 p.m.
