Vikings tread rough waters

The Decorah girls’ swim and dive team faced stiff competition from some larger schools Saturday at the Cougar Invite hosted by Cedar Rapids Kennedy, finishing 10th with 75 points. Iowa City West posted 464 for the team title.

   The Decorah girls’ swim and dive team faced stiff competition from some larger schools Saturday at the Cougar Invite hosted by Cedar Rapids Kennedy, finishing 10th with 75 points. Iowa City West posted 464 for the team title.
   While no events placed in the top three, the Vikes earned points in several events including back-to-back finishes by athletes in the 100-yard freestyle. Paige Werner touched the wall eighth in 57.53 seconds with teammate Julia Alberts close behind in 58.05 seconds, good for ninth. 
   The 200-yard freestyle relay was also ninth in 1:49.88. Members of the relay included Werner, Alberts, Katerina Kovarik and Isabella Sailor.
   Rounding out the top-10 finishes for Decorah was Alberts in the 200-yard individual medley. She posted a time of 2:29.95 for 10th place.
   The Vikings have a week to get back in the water to prepare for the Cedar Falls Invite scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 1,  at Holmes Junior High at 9 a.m.
