Vikings utilize expanded line-up

By Becky Walz,

The Decorah boys’ tennis team traveled to Oelwein Tuesday and came home with a 9-0 victory.
“This was the first time this spring that we have had a meet on a hot day. Oelwein has only six members on their team, so the JV stayed home and had a spirited intrasquad duel,” said Coach Reg Laursen.
Laursen knew from a previous outing that the Huskies’ team was a what one would consider strong and with an eye to the future, the Decorah veteran coach used an expanded line-up of nine.
“This way the guys lower in the lineup could get a better varsity experience. In matches like this it is sometimes hard for the guys to stay mentally focused, hitting shots that are strong, but at the same time have high margins for error, hence increasing consistency,” said Coach Laursen.
In singles action, Daniel Skrade moved into the No. 1 spot for Decorah to defeat Colton Roete in a pair of 6-0 sets. Brendan Hunter went 6-2 and 6-3 to best Spencer Logan at the No. 2 spot. Winning two 6-1 sets, No. 3 Edwin Holyoake tripped up Westin Woodson, while Luke Walter defeated Ryan Mortenson at No. 4, 6-1 and 6-1. Viking Landon Baker defeated Devin Pint, 6-0 and 6-2 and at No. 6, Michael Njus defeated Austin Schoultz, 6-0 and 6-0.
Gabe Anderson/Caden Branum teamed up in the No. 1 doubles spot to take care of Roete/Logan by 6-2 and 6-2 sets. At No. 2 it was Hunter/Holyoake defeated Woodson/Mortenson, 6-1 and 6-0. Besting Pint/Schoultz by a pair of 6-1 sets were Aidan Nalean-Carlson/Njus.
The Vikings will be at Waverly-Shell Rock Friday, April 30, at 4 p.m., and turn around to compete in the Mason City Tournament Saturday, May 1, at 9 a.m. Decorah will host the second annual conference tournament at Luther College Monday, May 3, at 9 a.m.
