Warrior boys pull out OT win over Eagles

By Becky Walz,

They needed an extra period, but the South Winn boys’ basketball team (14-5, 13-3 UIC) pulled off the 60-55 win over Clayton Ridge on the road Tuesday night. With the win, the Warriors finish second in the Upper Iowa Conference behind North Fayette Valley.

“This was a back-and-forth basketball game, and I am proud of our guys for staying together through the entire game to get the overtime win. This was a great game as it was a playoff atmosphere and took every single one of us on the team to grind out the win,” said Coach Blake Moen. “Huge shots, free throws, and defensive stops down the stretch helped get the win, and that is what we will need to win in the playoffs that start next week. Great team win by our guys to close out the conference season.”

The Warriors opened the game with a 13-7 advantage over the Eagles who narrowed the deficit in the second period to 25-22. The lid slammed shut on the SW basket in the third period, as the Warriors fell behind 35-32. With eight minutes left to play, SW made up the difference as the two squads were knotted at 49 when the final buzzer rang. In overtime, the Warriors put together a stronger performance to pull out the victory.

Trey Kriener was powerful near the basket, coming away with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Keagen Streeter added 11 points and eight boards, while Collin Wiltgen had the team’s second double-double with 10 pounds and 12 rebounds. On the board with eight points apiece were Jacob Herold and Cael Kuboushek, while Carson Wenthold put in two points to go with three steals.

South Winn will conclude the regular season in non-conference action tonight (Thursday, Feb. 11) at Waukon at 7:30 p.m. The postseason opens Monday, Feb. 15, as the Warriors host Clayton Ridge at 7 p.m.
