Strong efforts on both ends of the floor propelled the South Winn boys basketball team (2-0, 2-0 UIC) to an 89-30 victory over Central Elkader (0-3, 0-2 UIC) in Calmar Friday night.
“The defensive intensity was at a high level and we were able to create a lot of turnovers and turn them into easy baskets. The boys played fast and aggressive and it was nice to see them do it over the course of a whole game,” said Coach Derek Taylor.
Leading 18-13 after the first period, South Winn turned up the heat, outscoring the visiting Warriors 29-9 in the second quarter to lead 47-22 at halftime. Central Elkader managed just one free throw in the third and seven points against South Winn’s defense in the fourth.
Eleven Warriors scored at least two points on the night. They were led by sophomores Braiden Todd and Carson Streeter, each draining 21 points. As a team, South Winn had 30 steals with 10 coming from Todd alone to go with five assists. Streeter contributed four rebounds, six assists and five steals with his 21 points. Kole Hageman was also in double figures with 13 points to go with four boards, five assists and five steals. It was Matson Winings putting up 11 points, along with three rebounds, four steals, two assists and two blocks.
The Warriors are at West Central Tuesday, Dec. 5, then travel to East Buchanan for a non-conference battle Thursday, Dec. 7. Both varsity contests are slated to tip off at approximately 7:30 p.m.
