Warrior defense stifles MFL MarMac

By Becky Walz,

The South Winn boys’ basketball team (8-3, 8-2 UIC) stifled the MFL MarMac Bulldogs (4-7, 4-6 UIC) Tuesday night on the road, 80-49.

The Warrior defense was stiff to open the ball game, while taking a 17-10 lead after the first period. The SW offense remained efficient in the second quarter, putting up 21 points to take a 38-21 halftime lead. The score continued fall in the Red and Gray’s favor in the third frame as the Warriors lead 61-36 with eight minutes to play.

“This was a great performance by our guys for four quarters. They did an excellent job of playing with great defensive intensity that led to steals and quick shots which then led to points on the other end,” said Coach Blake Moen. “I also thought we rotated defensively very well and did a great job of rotating on help-side defense to plug up the lane and force longer shots. Offensively, we did a great job of sharing the basketball in transition and in the half court to make the extra pass for a high percentage shot.”

Trey Kriener was strong in the paint, scoring 19 points to lead South Winn. Three other Warriors were in double figures, including: Collin Wiltgen with 16, Jacob Herold with 11 and Carson Wenthold with 10. Keagen Streeter posted eight points, as did Cael Kuboushek

The Warriors will travel to Sumner-Fred Thursday, Jan. 21, with SW taking on Wapsie Valley Saturday, Jan. 23, at 4 p.m. The Red and White will start next week Tuesday, Jan. 26, with yet another road game at North Fayette Valley, at 7:30 p.m.
