In addition to celebrating its senior members Tuesday night, the South Winn girls’ wrestling team also celebrated its first-ever dual meet contest in the Warrior gym.
The Warriors went 1-2 in the night of duals with Sumner-Fredericksburg, Mount Vernon and Crestwood with a close victory of the S-F Cougars, 33-30. South Winn dropped a close dual to Mount Vernon, 39-30, and fell to Crestwood, 51-21.
“First off, it was senior night, and we want to thank our two seniors, Josseline Hageman, and Isabelle Kipp for all they’ve done these past years for Warrior girls wrestling, and our programs in general. We also want to congratulate our senior boys and cheerleaders for all their work for Warrior wrestling. On the mat, these ladies trusted some moving around and wrestled their tails off. It was this program’s first home win, and the first girls’ dual meet ever wrestled at South Winneshiek. That is not something lost on us, and I couldn’t be prouder of how hard they competed. That was a team win. If one of three or four different things gets flipped, we lose that dual so credit to them for their effort,” said Coach Ethan Adams.
Senior Josie Hageman was one of two Warriors to go 3-0 for the evening, the other was Kaydn Meyer.
At 115 pounds, in the first dual against Sumner-Fred, Hageman pinned Cameryn Judisch in 5:57. Facing Elizabeth Morf of Mount Vernon, Hageman turned her opponent for the fall in 1:18 and finished the night with an 8-1 decision over Addalyn Isaacson of Crestwood.
Meyer, wrestling at 120 pounds, took 3:47 to throw Mae Wedemeier of Sumner-Fred. In the dual versus Crestwood, the junior pinned Odessa Nibbelink in 4:48. She also received a forfeit against Mount Vernon.
“We also wrestled very well against stout opponents in Mount Vernon and Cresco. We won some matches that we may see at regionals and competed hard top to bottom. Our team rallied behind one of our girls who got her first win of the season, and it was a great thing to be a part of. On the whole, some good lessons were learned, and I think a lot of fans saw girls wrestling in a new light. These ladies are here to compete and compete hard,” concluded Coach Adams.
South Winn is at Central tonight (Thursday, Jan. 12) at 6 p.m., and will compete in a tournament at Oelwein Saturday, Jan. 14, at 10 a.m. Next week, the Warriors are at Sumner-Fredericksburg Tuesday, Jan. 17, at 5 p.m.
