Warrior girls finish ninth at Central

By Becky Walz,

Getting on the mats for the second time last week, the South Winn girls’ wrestling team competed at the 28-team Central Invite in Elkader Friday, finishing ninth with 75 points and one champion. Eighth-ranked Decorah took home the team title with 208 points while No. 4 East Buchanan was second with 170 points.
Seventh-ranked Izzy Kipp was the lone champion of the night at 190 pounds. A first-round bye placed the senior in the quarterfinal match against Avery Hoffmeyer of North Central where Kipp picked a pin in 1:00. It took Kipp 40 seconds to put Southeast Polk’s Grace Ellsbury on her back in the semifinal and 1:43 to throw No. 9 Alyson Krum of East Buchanan for the title.
Fellow senior Josie Hageman (110) was also in the finals, coming up a bit short after throwing Emma Hall of North Central in the quarterfinals and surviving a 6-4 decision over Addalyn Isaacson of Crestwood. In the finals Oelwein’s No. 9 Ryley Hartman caught Hageman on her back in 1:52.
“We were pleased overall with how we wrestled. It became an extremely long night, but we stayed focused and wrestled well, with Isabelle winning her last match by fall over a ranked opponent. Overall, we can continue to improve our positioning and continue to bring things from the room to the mat. I am pleased with our effort and think we continue to give our all,” said Coach Ethan Adams.
South Winn will recognize its senior wrestlers during Tuesday’s home triangular with Crestwood and Sumner-Fredericksburg in a meet that begins at 5:30 p.m.
