By Becky Walz,
It was a busy week for the South Winn girls’ wrestling team last week with a home meet Tuesday, a pair of road wins Thursday and a tournament in Oelwein Saturday.
Thursday night the Lady Warriors went 2-0 as a team in Elkader beating Postville and Central by scores of 42-24 and 42-12 respectively.
“We moved around to get everyone in the line-up and make sure that we got some good matchups. I thought we competed well and tried some new things on the mat. We can continue to improve in a couple specific areas, and the girls know that and are working hard,” said Coach Ethan Adams. “I’m really impressed with the way some of our first year wrestlers continue to improve and ask questions, and it is great to see them take a step forward with some confidence. It’s also pushing our veterans to get better and make them feel even more comfortable doing what they do each time out. It was enjoyable to be in the same location as our boys’ team for our athletes, coaches, and fans, and we want to congratulate Coach Elsbernd on his 200th dual win as head coach.”

Saturday was a long 10-plus hour day of wrestling for the South Winn girls as each of the nine Warriors wrestled at least four matches. The focus and resilience paid dividends as South Winn finished seventh in the pool of 25 teams at Oelwein with 154.5 points.
“We were able to stay pretty focused throughout the day and compete really well. We had girls pick up some great wins in the B and C brackets and compete extremely well all day, while Maddy Jansen wrestled hard in a very tough 135 bracket,” said Coach Adams.
Abby Wagner and Addison Timp finished second in 130B and 140B respectively. Josie Hageman and Kaydn Meyer went 3-2 in very tough 110-pound and 120-pound brackets, and Izzy Kipp finished second at 190.
“There were a lot of good things that we did, and some new things that we’ve been working on translated from practice to mat which is always great. There were a few matches that I think I’d like to see us turn around the other way, but out of 40+ matches, that translates to a pretty good day. We can continue to focus on our preparation and mental approach to each match as we close the season and prepare for regionals, and just maintain better position and awareness in important sequences during the match. We’re very proud of the girls and look forward to getting back to work,” concluded Coach Adams.
