Everything is coming together at the right time for the South Winn golf teams as their scores continue to lower with personal best tallies peaking just before the postseason. In a make-up meet from earlier this season, the Warriors played at North Fayette Valley with Central Elkader Thursday, then hosted Clayton Ridge Friday.
Personal bests
The South Winn girls put together quite a round at Pleasant Valley Sports Club in Clermont at 227. NFV finished the day with a 244, just ahead of Central Elkader’s 245. Katrina Hageman and Ruthie Frana each posted personal bests to sweep the medalist honors. Hageman fired a 52, while Frana came through with a 53. Paige Jaster also fashioned a personal-best score with a 60 to count for the Warriors. With 62s were Brooke Steffans and Elizabeth Bohr with Julia Carnesi the final varsity golfer at 66 strokes.
The boys were also on the course and finished second, putting up a team score of 193. NFV was the night’s winner with 177 while Central Elkader toured the course in 232 strokes.
Martin Horstman led the way for the Warriors with a 46. Jordan Baumler wasn’t far behind with a 48. Jacob Bohr came through with a 49 while Jackson Goltz added a 50. Shaun Klimesh provided a 51 while Brady Lensing added a 53.
“The boys played solidly, especially considering we’ve probably got some tired legs from a busy week. Our rounds are getting better, we just need to eliminate the big scores from our scorecards if we are going to play as well as I know that we can,” said Coach Michael Wenthold.
Home battle
Wrapping up the regular dual season, the Warriors hosted Clayton Ridge Friday, with boys defeating the Eagles 197 to 214, and the girls dropping the contest 249 to 226.
On the leaderboard for the boys, it was senior Shaun Klimesh taking top medalist honors with a 45. Baumler was the runner-up with 48. Also counting for South Winn were Lensing and Goltz with 52s. Jacob Bohr fired a 55 while Horstman came through with a 56. Others touring the course for the SW boys were Dawson Wenthold (61), Brady Jaster (62), Mitchell Vagts 62) and Aiden Rothmeyer (70).
“This was a good way to wrap up the regular season. We still need to find a way to eliminate the big scores on the scorecard, but this was a decent round heading into the postseason,” said Coach Wenthold.
Hageman had a solid round of 57 for South Winn to lead the charge for the girls. Firing a 63 was Frana, while Bohr shot a 64 with Steffans rounding out the scorecard with a 65. Carnesi was on the board with a 67, followed by a 68 from Paige Jaster.
“It was a long week for the Warriors playing four meets in five days. Due to an injury, Annie Ondrashek was playing for the JV squad, shot a career best and team low,” said Coach Glenna Munuswamy. “We are looking forward to our chances when we host the conference tournament Tuesday.”
Postseason this week
The Warriors started the postseason this week. Monday was the UIC boys’ meet, while the girls will host the UIC meet Tuesday, May 10, at South Winn Golf and Country Club near Calmar. The boys are at sectionals Wednesday, May 11, at Ed-Co, while the girls are at regionals Friday, May 13, at Luana.
