An exciting conference opener for the South Winn volleyball team (4-11, 0-1 UIC), unfortunately, went the way of Clayton Ridge (7-12, 2-1 UIC) Tuesday night.
In the five-set battle, the Eagles jumped out with a dominating first set win 14-25, before the Warriors responded with two big set wins in a row, 25-18 and 25-15. Clayton Ridge picked up the final two sets, including a 16-14 in set five to secure the victory.
Katrina Hageman led the way with 10 kills with Morgan Kleve and Janessa Zweibahmer adding 7 and 6 respectively. Ali Heying dished out 24 assists and Eryn Luzum put up 15 digs on defense. Morgan Kleve was 20-for-23 serving with five aces.
“After seeing Clayton Ridge in a tournament on Saturday, we went into the match confident that we could play right with them. We had a lot of bright spots and big moments, and I was proud of how we played through some adversity and played with great energy all night. A few mistakes giving up some easy points proved to be costly, but I’m encouraged by the progress and where we can still get to in conference play,” said Coach Alex Smith.
Tonight (Thursday, Sept. 23), the Warriors host Central Elkader on “Dig Pink” night, beginning with the JJV match at 5:30 p.m. South Winn will participate in the Decorah tournament Saturday, Sept. 25, at 8:30 a.m., and kick off next week on the road at North Fayette Valley Monday, Sept. 27. The Warriors will square off with Turkey Valley in Jackson Junction Tuesday, Sept. 28.
