The South Winn softball team (11-10, 7-1 UIC) picked up two conference victories to finish the week over MFL MarMac on the road before falling to Class 2A No. 14 Osage at home.
A good day
It was a slug-fest Wednesday as the Warriors swept MFL MarMac (5-14. 5-5 UIC) in Monona, 7-0 and 18-6.
The UIC teams went scoreless in the first three frames of game one before South Winn scratched one run across the plate in the fourth and another in the fifth. A five-run seventh inning gave the Warriors a cushion and the 7-0 win.
In game one, the Warriors had 11 hits with Ali Heying going 2-for-4 with a triple and a double. Three others accounted for doubles including two by Morgan Kriener. Providing a double apiece were Abby Wagner and Morgan Kleve.
The bats really heated up in game two with SW plating a run in the second, three in the third and six in the fourth before allowing the Bulldogs to score their first run of the night in the bottom of the fifth. The Warriors got another in the sixth and put the game out of MFL MarMac’s reach with seven runs in the final stanza to win 18-6.
Morgan Kleve went nearly 19 innings since giving up the last unearned run. The SW senior got the double win with 13 innings of work, giving up 10 total hits and striking out 10.
The nightcap saw South Winn produce 22 hits. Once again Heying was hot at the plate, going 5-for-5 with a triple, two doubles and six RBI. Wagner also had two doubles.
“I’m very happy with our pitching, defense and our hitting just keeps getting better,” said Coach Ken Buchheit.
