Following a tough loss last week, the South Winn boys’ basketball team (8-4, 6-3 UIC) bounced back into the win column Tuesday over Postville (1-9, 1-8 UIC) at home, 70-41.
By the end of the first period, the Warriors had sped out to an 18-5 advantage and only extended its lead by halftime to 39-16. The momentum remained in South Winn’s favor in the second half as the Warriors outscored the Pirates, 31-25, for the win.
“This was a good home win for the team,” noted Coach Derek Taylor. “We played fast tonight and applied heavy ball pressure to generate a lot of transition points. Our offense created a lot of open looks, we just need to make sure we finish our easy shots. Defensively we pressed a lot, which led us to giving up more open shots than I would like, but that is something we will focus on in practice over the next few days.”
Pacing the Warriors with 22 points and 10 rebounds was senior Trey Kriener. Adding 16 points, nine boards and four steals was Keagen Streeter, while Kole Hageman had 10 points and nine rebounds. Carson Wenthold was also in double figures with 10 points to go with four rebounds and three assists.
The Warriors will be on the court at Maynard Friday, Jan. 14, to take on West Central. South Winn will host MFL MarMac Tuesday, Jan. 18.
