Warrior softball takes doubleheader

It was a celebration of magnitude proportion as the South Winn softball team (12-12, 9-3 UIC) honored its senior players Wednesday with a pair of three-inning games with Postville, followed by a non-conference win over Oelwein Thursday. The Warriors shouldered a tough loss Friday at Sumner-Fred. Saturday’s tournament at Decorah was rained out.

The Warriors shouldered a tough loss Friday at Sumner-Fred. Saturday’s tournament at Decorah was rained out.

Senior night
Both games of Wednesday’s varsity twinbill lasted three innings as the Warriors defeated Postville (0-14, 0-12 UIC) at home.
South Winn won the first game, 14-2. The Warriors scored in each of the innings, plating two in the first, and six in both the second and third.
Eryn Luzum went the distance on the mound, giving up four hits and striking out five.
Ella Willey went 3-for-3 with a home run and drove in five runs. Senior Liz Engelhardt had a solo home run as well. Ruthie Frana was also 3-for-3 with a pair of triplies.
It was a no-hitter for Luzum in game two with eight strikeouts in three innings of work as the Warriors defeated the Pirates 12-0.
Engelhardt hit her second home run of the night in the contest and drove in two runs. Joining her in rounding the bases with a single swing was Janessa Zweibahmer with a pair of RBI. The senior also had a double in the contest.

At home
Utilizing a trio of big innings, South Winn trapped the Oelwein (5-15) Thursday night in Calmar, 12-8.
The Huskies pushed the first run across home plate in the opening frame before the Warrior bats went to work for three in the bottom of the same frame. SW added to its lead with four more in the second to lead 7-1. Oelwein cut into the lead with a four-run fourth that was mirrored by the Warriors in the bottom of the same frame to maintain the lead, 11-5. In the fifth, the Huskies scratched across three runs; however, it was not enough to overcome the home team.
Luzum maintained dominance on the pitcher’s mound with four strikeouts for the win, giving up eight runs on eight hits.
South Winn scattered 18 hits up and down the line-up with Wagner sending the ball out of the park for two RBI. E. Willey hammered out a triple and two singles, while Morgan Kleve and Izzy Kipp rapped out a double each.

Caged by Cougars
The Warriors were shutout Friday afternoon at Sumner-Fred (17-5) in five innings, 11-0.
The Cougars needed just two frames to put the game away, plating three runs in the second and eight in the fourth to shut down South Winn.

Regular season ending
The Warriors were at Turkey Valley Monday and will conclude the regular season with Kee in New Albin Wednesday, June 29, at 5:30 p.m.
