By Becky Walz,
It was a busy end of the week for the South Winn volleyball team (4-11), hosting Wapsie Valley Thursday and competing in the Nashua-Plainfield tournament Saturday.
Non-conference dual
The Lady Warriors fell to an unyielding Wapsie Valley (6-4) team in three straight sets Thursday. Set scores were 8-25, 11-25 and 3-25.
“We knew going in this would be one of the toughest opponents we would see all year, as they returned a number of starters from a state qualifying team last season. We showed some stretches of some good volleyball in the first two sets keeping pace with them at times and scrambling well to keep the ball alive,” said Coach Alex Smith.
Katrina Hageman and Avery Luzum led the way with three kills each and Hageman also put up five digs in the contest. Ali Heying dished out eight assists.

Tourney action
Saturday, the Warriors went 1-2 at the Nashua Plainfield tournament finishing in fourth place.
SW kicked off the day with a three-set win (21-16, 14-21, 15-1) over West Fork (4-8). The Warriors then had a rematch with North Linn (14-4) from the previous weekend suffering a 2-0 loss (12-21, 11-21), playing much more competitive with the Lynx in this outing. The final match of the day, the Warriors had a preview of an upcoming conference match with Clayton Ridge. After winning a tight opening set (21-19), the Warriors dropped the next two 12-21 and 8-15.
Katrina Hageman led the day with 11 kills, followed by Morgan Kleve with 10 and Janessa Zweibahmer with 8. Ali Heying dished out 27 assists on the day. Eryn Luzum led with digs from the libero position with 33, Ali Heying 20 and Katrina Hageman 17. Avery Humpal had a strong serving day going 14/17 with 3 aces.
“We knew after our tough matchup with Wapsie on Thursday, we would find ourselves in some competitive matches today. It was good to get that opening match win to settle in, and I was proud of the way we competed with North Linn this time around. Unfortunately, after grabbing that opening set against Clayton Ridge, we lost some consistency with our passing and offensive play and allowed Clayton Ridge to settle into their offense. We look forward to a rematch with them on Tuesday,” said Coach Smith.
