By Becky Walz,
With just over a week before the postseason begins, the South Winn baseball team (21-8, 14-2 UIC) took on a couple non-conference opponents last week, dropping a contest to Sumner-Fred and a pair to Class 3A Waverly-Shell Rock.
Slow offense
South Winn saw its eight-game win streak snapped on Wednesday in a non-conference loss to Sumner-Fredericksburg-Tripoli (8-14) on the road, 3-1.
The Warriors jumped out to the early 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but SFT responded with three runs of their own in the bottom. This would prove to be the only runs of the game as both pitchers settled in.
Cael Kuboushek tossed six solid innings for the Warriors, allowing just one hit after allowing four hits in the first inning. The Warrior defense was solid behind him committing just two errors on the evening.
SW tallied just four hits in the contest, led by senior Ethan Luzum who was 2-for-3. Kuboushek and Jacob Herold had the Warriors’ other two singles with Keagen Streeter driving in the lone run for the Warriors.
“Unfortunately, this was one of those nights where we couldn’t get anything going offensively. We struck out just five times on the night, but we couldn’t come up with any big hits when we had opportunities to score,” said Coach Alex Smith.

At Waverly
South Winn dropped a non-conference doubleheader at Waverly-Shell Rock (22-6) on Thursday evening in Waverly.
In game one, the Warriors trailed 6-0 heading to the top of the seventh. It got interesting as the Warriors pounded four runs on four hits and had the tying run at second base before the Go-Hawks captured the final out. The Warriors played clean defense in game, out hit the Go-Hawks 10-4, but came up on the losing side. The Go-Hawks scored four runs in the bottom of the third on two outs that proved to be a big difference in the game.
Keagen Streeter threw for three innings for SW and shouldered the loss on the mound. At the plate, Carson Wenthold was 3-for-3 with one RBI.
The nightcap was all Go-Hawks as they jumped out to the early lead and recorded the 10-run rule in six innings.
“We knew going in we would face a high quality team in all facets. We made some uncharacteristic mistakes on defense and on the basepaths. All things I’m confident we will clean up as we get set for postseason play,” said Coach Smith.
