Each team won a game in Saturday’s triangular held in Calmar Saturday between South Winn, Decorah and Ottumwa.

Winneshiek Co. showdown
Pitching and defense were keys to the Warrior’s 7-2 victory over Decorah on Saturday.
The Warriors went ahead 2-0 after two innings thanks to RBIs by Briar Tigges and Dayten Ondrashek after Nick Holien busted out a double and Jacob Herold was issued a walk in the second. Carson Wenthold took advantage of a walk, stolen base and an error to put SW on top 3-0 in the third frame.
Decorah’s Cai Brevig connected for a hit in the fifth which eventually led to a run scored by pinch runner Ben Wymer. South Winn struck again in the sixth with three runs to put the game out of reach for Decorah.
Ethan Luzum struck out the first seven batters he faced in the start and scattered four hits over his five innings of work to pick up the win on the hill. Jordan Buchheit picked up the save striking out two batters in the seventh after allowing the leadoff batter on base.
Briar Tigges recorded two hits while Nick Holien and Logan Hageman both doubled for the four hits in the game.
“This is always a fun and competitive game for our guys to play in. Ethan was amped up to start the game and Jordan did a great job of working through a couple tough situations to pick up the save,” said SW Coach Alex Smith.
Decorah Coach Adam Riley echoed those sentiments saying, “It was a great day to play two quality opponents.  Hats off to South Winn for really being ready to play in game one both mentally and physically.”
At the mound, Briggs Duwe went four innings for Decorah and gave up four runs on two hits and struck out four. Also making appearances were Gunnar Steine and Dane Frieden.
The Vikes had 11 hits, from five different athletes — Luzum, Duwe, Stors, Brevig and James Marx.

Vikings versus Ottumwa
Within an hour of dropping the contest to South Winn, the Vikes were back on the field to face Class 4A (18-5), coming away with an 11-2 victory.
The Ottumwa Bulldogs utilized three singles and a double to put the first two runs on the board, but it was Decorah with the momentum. Cael Luzum kicked off the first inning with a double and later scored on a fielder’s choice ball hit by Keenan Tyler. Another Viking double by Noah Storts and singles by Kody Bodensteiner and James Marx gave Decorah the 4-2 advantage. From there, the game belonged to the Vikes with a run crossing home plate in the third and six in the fifth.
“Coach Hogan and myself were really pleased with how well we responded in our second game of the day against Ottumwa,” said Viking Coach Adam Riley. “Cael Luzum was outstanding again on the mound against a very good offensive lineup and we had many great at bats in the second game to support his effort.”
At the plate, the Vikes had 13 hits. Bodensteiner produced two hits, including a triple and had two RBI. Briggs Duwe drove in three runs, while Keenan Tyler and two hits and three stolen bases. Brady Hogan also had two hits.

End of the day
South Winn’s eight-game winning streak was snapped by Ottumwa in the final game of the triangular Saturday.
The Warriors managed just five hits in the contest and committed four miscues in the field leading to several unearned runs early in the game.
Nick Holien suffered the loss in the start, while Carson Wenthold, Jacob Herold and Briar Tigges also climbed the mound in relief.
“We knew we would be facing a tough offense in this game and would have to execute defensively to be competitive, and unfortunately that didn’t happen for us. Offensively we faced one of the better arms we’ve seen all year and battled to get our five hits. We know this type of game should make us better in the long run,” said SW Coach Smith.
