Warriors carve out victories over TV

By Becky Walz,

The Turkey Valley golf teams were left with a skeleton squad due to a myriad of reasons when they played South Winn at the South Winn Golf and Country Club near Calmar in a rescheduled meet from earlier in the season Tuesday. This allowed the Warrior boys the opportunity to come through with a win 188 to 214, while the SW girls were victorious 238 to 260.

The Trojans played with the bare minimum of four boys and four girls but were able to go home with the top spot in both the boys’ and girls’ divisions.
“Mother Nature seemed to mock us a little as the sun finally came out just about the same time as the last putt was holed after an inch of rain fell overnight,” said TV Coach John Reicks.
Turkey Valley seniors Garrett Kurtenbach and Lance Schmitt provided the highlights in the boys’ meet as Kurtenbach fired a 43 to claim overall medalist honors once again. South Winn freshman Jackson Goltz was declared the runner-up with a 45 on his card.
G. Kurtenbach recorded five pars on the night. Only a double bogey on Hole No. 1 and a nasty triple bogey on Hole No. 5 cost him a shot at a sub-40 round.
South Winn had three other golfers with sub-50 rounds including Shaun Klimesh (46), Martin Horstman (48) and Jordan Baumler (49) to fill the scorecard. Also on the course were Brady Lensing (52) and Jacob Bohr (57).
“We need to clean that up before post-season play begins next week. Lance recorded a career low 56 on the night and really was striking the ball well. Putting was his ‘Achilles heel,’ however; and it prevented him from scoring even lower. It was still nice to see his performance improve by leaps and bounds,” commented Coach Reicks.
Trojan sophomore Caleb Kurtenbach (50) lowered his season average by six strokes from a year ago, and Rolin Schmitt (65) battled his way around the course to give them the fourth counter the Trojans desperately needed to be able to generate a team score.
Turkey Valley’s Tess Franzen picked up her seventh straight medal on the season as she fired a low round of 53 to garner overall medalist honors. A couple of “snowmen” late in her round cost her a chance to break 50 for the first time in her career.
For South Winn, it was Katrina Hageman and Elizabeth Bohr fashioning 58s, while Ruthie Frana provided a round of 59 for the Warrior team score. Brooke Steffans (63) and Julia Carnesi (65) also toured the course.
Trojan underclassmen Mariah Throndson (65), Alison Leibold (67) and Abby Schmitt (75) rounded out the Turkey Valley scorecard.
“The girls continue to gain valuable experience as the season winds down,” added Coach Reicks.
