Warriors collect pair of UIC wins

By Becky Walz,

Playing back-to-back nights didn’t seem to faze the South Winn boys’ basketball team (9-4, 8-2 UIC) as the Warriors picked up two wins late last week.

Winning big

The Warriors ran away with the make-up game Thursday against West Central (2-12. 1-9 UIC), building an early lead and keeping the hammer down.

“It was a great job by our guys coming out from the get-go with a good pace to build a lead and continue to add to it. We showed some great strides in our offense and defense and it was nice to get all of our bench players into the game,” said Coach Blake Moen.

SW came out hitting its first three shots and manufactured a 16-9 lead after the first and added to its advantage in the second period. At the half, the Warriors were on top 38-18. The Red and Gray held the Blue Devils to three points in the third as everyone took a turn of the floor for SW, with a 60-21 lead with eight minutes to play.

Trey Kriener had the hottest hand of the night with 20 points and eight rebounds. Chipping in 13 points was Jacob Herold, while Carson Wenthold and Keagen Streeter added nine each. Coming off the bench, Brandon Frana grabbed five boards, as did Streeter.

Celebrating seniors

The Warriors picked up their second conference win in two days Friday, defeating Central Elkader (4-11. 3-8 UIC) at home, 61-43.

“I’m proud of our guys for grinding out a key conference win after playing the night before. We did a great job late in the third quarter and fourth to hit some key shots and get defensive stops to close out the game,” said Coach Moen. “It was also a great night to recognize our seniors. We would like to thank them for their commitment over the last four years on our team and their efforts to the program. I am thankful for our sever seniors, and I look forward to what these guys can do in leading us the rest of the season.”

South Winn took the early lead 17-13 after the first eight minutes and pushed its advantage to 34-22 at the half. The Warriors maintained their pressure in the third period to lead 50-34 with one period left to play.

Jacob Herold led the way with 17 points to go with five rebounds and three steals. Trey Kriener posted a double-double with 14 points and 14 boards, in addition to a trio of blocks. Joining the pair in double figures was sophomore Carson Wenthold with 10, while snaring three steals and three rebounds. Under the rim, senior Dominic Sisneros grabbed seven rebounds.
