It was hard to rebound from an early deficit Tuesday as the South Winn boys’ basketball team (8-5, 6-4 UIC) fell to MFL MarMac (11-2, 9-0 UIC) at home 66-51.
The Bulldogs took it to the Warriors in the early going of the game and claimed a 24-4 lead after the first period, which proved to be the difference at the final buzzer. SW scratched into the advantage ever-so-slight by the break to make it, 40-22. The Warriors outscored the Bulldogs in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to make a difference.
“Credit to MFL MarMac as they came out and took it to us in the first three minutes of the game, and we were never able to get back at it. Tough night for us all around, but we will move past it quickly as we have two more games this week,” said Coach Derek Taylor.
Leading SW on the floor with 15 points was Carson Wenthold. Keagen Streeter put down 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while Nick Holien added 10 points and four boards.
South Winn will entertain Crestwood Thursday, Jan. 20, at 7:45 p.m. In a rescheduled contest that was to have taken place before Christmas, the Warriors will pay Decorah a visit Saturday, Jan. 22, at 2 p.m. They will be on the road next week as well beginning with North Fayette Valley Tuesday, Jan. 25.
