In its first game back from the holiday break, the South Winn boys’ basketball team (6-3, 5-2 UIC) found itself struggling on both ends of the floor against Kee (5-4, 3-2 UIC) on the road Tuesday night, falling 60-55.
The Warriors caved to the Hawks’ pressure early, allowing Kee to lead 26-17 at the break. Kee extended its lead to as many as 20 points in the third period before South Winn began to scratch away at the deficit, getting to within five late in the fourth period; however, the comeback fell short.
“We came out flat and they took it to us for three quarters. We struggled on both ends of the floor, honestly it looked more like a first game of the season then midseason,” said Coach Derek Taylor. “The silver lining going forward is the kids didn’t give up. We had a couple of chances to get it to a one possession game late, but I made a couple mistakes on the coaching side and in the end dug a hole a little too deep to get out of. Will learn from this one and it will make us a better team come February.”
Trey Kriener was on fire in the paint with 25 points and 12 rebounds, while Keagen Streeter added 17 points and six boards. Dawson Wenthold just missed double figures with nine points.
South Winn travels to Clayton Ridge Friday, Jan. 7, then competes in the Winter Classic at Upper Iowa University in Fayette versus Don Bosco Saturday, Jan. 8, at 2:30 p.m. The Warriors host MFL MarMac Tuesday, Jan. 11.
