By Becky Walz,
It took two days to complete the conference doubleheader between the South Winn softball team (9-13, 7-5 UIC) and North Fayette Valley (9-13, 6-4 UIC) as Warrior senior Mary Frana suffered an injury in the outfield that rattled both squads late in game one Wednesday.
The opening game went to the TigerHawks, 10-2, with NFV scattering six hits to score in five separate innings. With the Warrior bats silent for much of the game, SW managed to plate two runs in the sixth.
With starting pitcher Eryn Luzum out with an injury, sophomore Morgan Kleve stepped into the pitcher’s circle for four innings, allowing three hits and striking out one. Abby Wagner made her first varsity appearance, giving up two runs on three hits.
Kleve connected for South Winn’s lone hit of the game, while Avery Humpal and Liz Engelhardt each drove in a run.
Returning to West Union Thursday, the Warriors dropped the second contest, 9-3.
It was a better offensive attack for South Winn with nine hits on the board, all of which were singles. Supplying two-hits apiece were Alison Heying, Emma Houdek, Isabella Opperman and Kleve. Ruthie Frana connected for the other hit.
Once again, Kleve suffered the loss after going the distance giving up eight hits and fanning four.
