Warriors fall down the stretch

By Becky Walz,

Playing on the road, the South Winn boys’ basketball team (9-5, 8-3 UIC) wasn’t able to pull off the win, falling to North Fayette Valley (14-2, 11-1 UIC) Tuesday night, 51-40.

“We didn’t start the game how we wanted in the first period, but we made a few adjustments and battled back in the remaining quarters to give ourselves a lead in the fourth and a chance to win itl we just didn’t quite close it out,” said Coach Blake Moen. “This game was back-and-forth with runs, and NFV hit some big shots and went on a late run to ultimately give them the lead to close and get the win. I am proud of our guys battling till the end and giving great effort.”

The Warriors fell behind early, trailing 18-9 after the first frame. Although South Winn cut it to 22-20 at halftime and kept the game tied 33-33 with eight minutes to play, it was the fourth period which doomed the Warriors. NFV went ahead in the final period as SW couldn’t keep the momentum flowing.

Keagen Streeter had an all-around game with 12 points, eight rebounds and two blocks. Trey Kriener chipped in eight points to go with four boards. Jacob Herold and Collin Wiltgen added seven apiece, with Wiltgen coming away with seven rebounds.
