Warriors fall short versus Eagles

By Becky Walz,

The South Winn girls’ basketball team (1-1, 0-1 UIC) did everything it could to pick up its second win Tuesday, Nov. 23, but the Warriors came up just a little short, falling to Clayton Ridge (1-0, 1-0 UIC) at home 38-30.
Both teams had a strong first quarter, with the Eagles taking a 10-8 lead. That advantage extended in the second, with Clayton Ridge going into the locker room up 22-16.
South Winn made a go of it, cutting the lead to three at 27-24 with a frame to go; however, the Eagles held them off to claim the conference victory.
Josie Tieskoetter led the team in scoring with nine points, along with seven rebounds. Morgan Kleve and Janessa Zweibahmer put up eight points apiece with Zweibahmer grabbing a team-high 12 boards and four steals. Kleve hauled in nine rebounds.
“It was a tough night shooting and we just struggled to get in rhythm offensively,” said Coach Justin Izer. “Hats off to Clayton Ridge, they were physical and scrappy, we went right where they wanted us to go all night. Basketball is a long season. We will look to improve on this one and get ready for our next game.”
South Winn will be at Postville Tuesday, Nov. 30, and hosts West Central Friday, Dec. 3. Both contests are slated to begin at 6:15 p.m. The busy week concludes with a non-conference game versus Mabel-Canton in the Border Battle Saturday, Dec. 4, at Decorah High School at 5 p.m.
