Warriors fourth at Wapsie Valley

By Becky Walz,

In the 14-team Chris Davis tournament, hosted by Wapsie Valley Saturday, the South Winn wrestling team posted a strong finish.
The Warriors earned fourth place with 108 points. Nashua-Plainfield was the team champion with 199 points.
Before the hitting the road Saturday, three individuals from the South Winn girls’ squad wrestled at Decorah with success.

Two in the finals
“For the varsity tournament we had a very up and down day. I don’t think we wrestled to our capabilities in the first round, which really came back to haunt us. The tournament was set up inadvertently to eliminate the wrestlebacks to third place, so some of our kids were only able to get to the fifth-place match. On a positive note, that format will give them experience of what the sectional tournament will be like and shows the importance of that first round match,” said Coach Jake Elsbernd. “We had our JV in action today as well and had some competitive matches throughout the day. It was good to see the kids having success in a few areas that we have really focused on. I am definitely pleased with how some of our newer and inexperienced kids are coming along.”
Tony Greve and Ethan Timp were both in the finals for the Warriors.
Greve was the lone champion, claiming the title at 195 pounds. He started the day pinning Jackson Zwanziger of Nashua-Plainfield in 2:35. In the semifinal, Greve won an 8-4 decision over Oelwein’s Austin Perry. In the finals, he survived the three periods to win 1-0 over Jack Mendoza over Eagle Grove.
E. Timp came up just short at 285 pounds, earning second place. The senior threw Isaac Jones of Nashua-Plainfield in 1:04, before besting Oelwein’s Christian Stoler by a 1-0 decision. In the finals, he was pinned by Mitchel Mar of Riceville in 1:27.
